RES701 Cource Feedback

I really enjoyed this class, even if this semester was messy. The concepts of Epistemology and Ontology(Has to google spelling everytime), were new concepts to me and therefore were very interesting. The idea that the scientific method is not the defacto correct way of looking at thing is one that challange what I have be thaugh since I was was a small child. I also enjoyed learning about how different cultures view reality and how these thing combine to form research methodolgies.

One of my biggest problems with Research is how to avoid bias. Like I understand that bias can’t be avoided but what is the line, is someone being passionate about a topic enought for them to be bias toward it or do you need someother insentive such as money.

I missed a lot of the later leasons about ethics and copy right which is a shame because those are proberly the topics I have the most to say about. I would have like to have them sooner as we had discussions about them in the classes were we were coming up wit hout research topics before the classes where we discused them.

I will not stop try to use big words you cannot make me!!!!

RES701 Other Peoples Blogs

Callum’s Chats https://callumschat.wordpress.com/.

One of the most detailed blogs I’ve ever seen. This place looks more like a learning resources than a normal blog. Callum’s blog was one of the places I when when I wasn’t sure on what I was meant to be doing. Because there is so much information here I can easierly summerise it or find point which I can google and do my own research.

Asriel’s Blog https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U5kIROiTvPib5gldAskDspVyV9RdBRQZ3sxgSpKRITE/edit

I enjoyed how short this one was. It is straight to the point and easy to follow. Not having to deal with word presses weird exintirities made it easy for me to follow.

Jason’s Blog https://jmoverthinking.wordpress.com/

An extremely professional looking blog if I was to stumble appon this blog while doing research I would imitdately expect it to be of profesional level. The main reason I think this is because of how it is layed out. The text is just spread out enought for which I can keep track of what is going on but not to spread out that it looks like a barren waste land. Also there is a lot of person prespective in this blog.

RES701 Journal Ethics and Copy Right

Copyright and creative commons.

Most people want to feel mastery over anything they are good at. This is why they get upset if they are not agnolaged and or compistated for their work. Because for this the use of other peoples work needs to have limitation put on it.

Using someone work or building on it can make the person feel like they have been cheated this is why we have copyright law. It allows people to feel like they have be reconised for their work and rewarded for putting in effort. I think this is a fair thing as with out this there would be no insentive to work on anything.

On the other hand I believe it is unfair for one person to own an idea. All work comes form somewhere nomatter how origional it seems, this means it would be hypercitital in my opinion to them prevent other people from building on previous ideas.

In research this is important because unlike onther mediums information normally can not directly be owned. Research, esically that which uses the scientific method normally need to build appon previous research. Becasuse of this it becomes an ethical issue for if we reference others work.

Referencing other work is important to incorrage others to share their ideas in a way which they can be built appon and not corse the hording of information like research dragon.

Ethics

Ethics cover what we do outside of law, inplace of law and inspite of law. The fundermental idea behind it is not can I do something but is it ‘right’ to do it. This normally include things like copy right, how experments are carried out and what information is shared.

Senario One

Unethical. The posting of an images to a blog without editing it prevents the origional cretor form gaining from the images as you are using the image for it’s base purpose without compinsation.

Senerio Two

Unethical. I don’t thing testing a potentially harmful drug on people on it’s own is a bad thing. I also thing the assumtion for a lot of the people who enroll in these kind of studies are that they will be a risk. My problem is more that most of the people who enroll in this study are likely desperate. This could lead them to making some unwise deasions. Additionally I don’t thing there is enought time for properly corective treatment for the plasebo group.

Senerio Three

I don’t know. Depends on the sort of drug. But generally this is a bad pratics as it discorages ALL form of journalisic sorces as people are worred that you will give them up. So I proberly would say unethical.

Senerio Four

Firstly you don’t seem to have properly debrief the child you kicked out of your experiment. That is one of the most basic parts of ethical studies of humans. Secondly can you ever properly debrief a child. Thirdly if this is mean to have an impact on someone who are you going to undo it?

Senerio Five

This could be etical but there are proper protocals for this sort of thing to make sure no damge is done.

Ethical. You are in a public place no one is exected to have full privacy, espically if they are doing something wrong.

The IT area/subject I have most enjoyed is project management. When I started I.T. i though system analysies and design was the thing I wanted to be as far away from as possible. Onces I started taking SYD I found that I enjoyed creating diagrams.

The IT area/subject I least enjoyed is networking. I found that I had no ablitiy to problems solve for networking. All of the techniques that I normally use to problem solved didn’t work and I found I wasn’t making any progress.

The IT area/subject I was most interested in is web development. Web development is a confusing topic for me. It seems to be where a lot of the I.T. industry is heading so I would like to get better at it.

The one IT thing I never want to have to do again is networking. Please see above for reason.

I chose to study IT because I didn’t want to do anything else. I couldn’t think of anything else I wanted to do and I had decided this was defentantly what I wanted to do at the beginning of highschool.

If I couldn’t study IT I would study I don’t know bussness? I found I probably would like some level of bussness management job. I like those parts of the coarse so far. I may get sick of this quickly though.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a game developer. I though the idea of making a video game was cool. I did not understand the process which was involved in creating a game at the time. As I looked into it I decidied that I wasn’t really interested in it and moved towards more of a generic program idea.

One IT thing I would like to know more about is development of future I.T. solutions such as quatine computers and Block chain technolgies. I find future techolges fun to learn about and would like to understand these technolgies which seem almost magical to me more.

RES701 Journal 5 8/5/20

Today I provided I presentation about randomized trials. A randomized trial is where a group of participants are separated into two groups randomly. One group is given a placebo and the other is giving what is being tested. The treatment for both remains the same.

I don’t know in what way you would use randomized trial in I.T. This is because Randomize trials are generally used in the medical field and the social sciences. If you were ever working with these fields you would have to think about random trials for how you develop the application.

Isolating the group can allow the us to find out if the target of the test is actually effective or if the treatment is the coarse of the results. However, there are several considerations to make when it comes to running these trails. The trail can’t filter out influences out side the control of the treatment. If there is a better alternative for the tested trail it can be hard to find participants.

A part from those minor consideration their is also the moral considerations of given something which you know may not work or withholding something which may work. In recent years these have been taking into account but for most of the trails I found a lot of them may not allow for correction after the trail.

Randomize trail lies heavily on the number side of the research paradigm. I say this because the design of randomize trials is to ‘sacrifice’ some people to gain number which help other people. Even with considerations for morality it is still rooted in a heavy science side.

Sourse 1

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zp92mp3/revision/1

Found though Google with a search for Computational Thinking. Is a web article on the subject. I couldn’t Find date or aurther.

I think this article is morderatly believable as the BBC would be considured to be an OK sourse. Additionally the information here is presented like a teaching suplement, making me trust it more. I would expect the information here to be summerised and maybe missing some information for the sake of brevidy.

Sourse 2

Found though youtube Computational Thinking. Is a youtube video public on 9 of May 2018 by Paxton/Patterson.

I don’t expect the information in this video to be take full. This is becasue the video is particlly short, this mean the information is proberly summerised to an extreme length. Allow this would normally would make the information un trust worthy but the video has it’s comments disable. This means their is no place for scrutieny of the video.

Found Though Proquest with a search for Computational Thinking filtering for schoolary Journals.

Being a Schoolarly Journal this is likely going to have more credible information. Ontop of that several people worked on the article meaning their were multiple voice involved. The article was written in a professional maner, without summerising the infomration that was found. The article also provides a references so it would be possible to check their sourses as well.

Found though a youtube search for Virtualisation Technology. Published by IBM Cloud on the 29 of March 2019.

The overwellming amount of possitive feedback does add to the sence of credibility but the channel is trying to sell a product so it is likely somewhat biased.

Source 2

Found though the reference section on the Virtualisation wikipideia page.

This is a thesis paper submited by Charles David Graziano in 2011.

This paper is extremely credible writting by someone with a lot of knolegde on the subject published profesionally and reviewed as part of the process. Like most acidemenic paper this one has many references.

This text is slightly old and might be out of date. There aren’t any references and I’ve never heard of the magiaze before therefore I don’t give it much crediblilty.

For this class we discussed different research paradigms. A research paradeign is the set of ontology and epistemology belief which the researcher is incorperatied into their research. This is simlar to a concept I discussed in a previous blog.

The purpose of a research paradigms so that everyone is on the same page to what the researcher believes and what assumtions they have made. Simlar to a methophor a research paradigm allows the researcher to implie a large amount of information with out having to state it all.

The Interpretivist Paradigm

The interpretivist Paradigm is a research methodlogy basied on the the premist we can not sepate our understanding of the world from what were observe. Because of this it is believed that research can be conducted via negations and interview. Interpretivist generally relies on gathering of information from people rater than previous data.

I personally don’t like this research paradigm as I would prefer to do everthing by statics and ‘proven facts’. However I believe this is an important paradigm espically when working with people. The concept of not being able to seperate facts from personal experience is a concept that I experience all of the time. Because of this I understand to when dealing with people fact are normally out weighed by feelings. This makes Interpretivist useful when dealing with a human element.

The Positivist Paradigm

Positivist Paradigm is what I would thing of when you talk about anything to do with the sciences that I learnt in high school. Positivist believes that the world exist regardlise of human obsevation and therefore can be measured and controlled in a logical way.

The Positivist Paradigm is what I would can my safezone for research paradigms. Like previously meationed I understand it and it was what I was taught.

Positivist is vary good at producing numbers. Though the ‘scientific method’ Positivist can product consistant statics. The problems with Positivist are that the data that we recieve can be interptied in different ways and nothing we produce is ever 100% cetain. Addtionally Positivist tends to condrtict what many people observe.

Critical or Subtle Realist Paradigm

This is were I believe that my world view comes from.

The Realist Paradigm is about how the world exist apart from ourselves but we lack the ability to interpritie properly. Realist means that data we colect should be future scrutines to hopefully gain the most accrate form of data. Additionally Realist tends to preform experements more in context that Positivem.

I have seen many ‘scientific studies’ which come under scrutiny because their are visable bias which come into play in the study. Because of this their are many studies which have conflicting resaults for example I have seen conflicting resaults for things like ‘Does negitive reinforment work’ and ‘Do video game corse violence’. In a realist persepective these studies can be looked at and broken down to see why we might have gotten differing resaults.

Personally I believe that each of the three paradigms I have talked about have their own places and can be used to gain knolegde.

Ontology

Ontology is the study of of being. (Peter+M. Simons.) The purpose of ontology is to provide a distinction between what is real and what isn’t. (Peter+M. Simons.)

Ontology is important to research as it allows for the researcher to have a base to which they can work with. Ontology heavily relies on other disciplines because of this researcher could need to provide knowledge of their discipline to provide others context.(Peter+M. Simons.)

I think that Ontology is kind of a counter culture concept which purposely works again what most people assume is correct. I believe that not everything inwithout Ontology iswe meant towouldn’t be taken seriously. While some concepts are, a lot of ontology in my option is meantable to bebuild takenoff onprevious a surface level to provide a way that provides a question how do we know what we knowresearch. This is still important for research as anything in the scientific world can be proven wrong where it’s almost impossible to prove something correct.

I believe without Ontology we wouldn’t be able to build off previous research.

Epistemology

Epistemology is the study of knowledge and the idea the human perception is flawed. (Avrum StrollA.P. Martinich (Jan 30, 2020).) The idea is how do we know numbers are what we say they are or is a set which contanse all sets which exclude it’s selves, include itself. (What’s the relationship between epistemology and ontology in different traditions?)

Epistemology relates to research as the purpose of the scientific method is to be able to look past the possible holes in ones thinking. Research Relies heavily on the scientific method. Avrum StrollA.P. Martinich (Jan 30, 2020).

I think epistemology isn’t as complicated as ontology because ontology requires you to question the basics of existence. Where epistemology is more like like bending what we know.

How they relate?

In terms of research Ontology and epistemology proved a stimulation where nothing ‘true’ or correct but we can still work with the rules we are given to gather and interpret knowledge. By setting our own definitions we can work past abstract limits similar to imaginary numbers in mathematics.

I personally find epistemology easier to understand because it reminds me of mathematics and previously mentioned. This is because a lot of rules in mathematics are create. For example we use base 10 for our counting but we could just as easily use binary. Where ontology is more like physics a topic I have problems understanding. Physics is more about how things happen.

Epistemology and Ontology relate to research in a similar way that math and physics do. Just in a more abstract way.

Research is a methodology to try and find the accurate information. It using methods such are cross referring and using peer reviewed articles. Research also has a goal such as to find out new information.

I think I will use research a lot though out my life. The main place I think I will use research is at the start of project to gain information to complete the conceptual and the design phase of IT project work. I also expect that research methods will be used throughout development and testing. I also have an interest in several acidic topics such as mathematics and physic for me to understand these topic properly I would need to be able to properly applies research methods.

A research journal allows a research to keep track of the research they have preformed. With the use of a research journal the research can find sources which they have previously used, find flaws in their research methodology and prove the use of valid research methods.

Plagiarism is when someone takes a idea from somewhere else and doesn’t properly credit the original person or people. It’s important to avoid plagiarism as referencing adds credibility to work. It adds credibility in two ways. The first is by adding validation to the originator of the work. With out this it could be discouraging to preform research. The second to to create a trail to allow someone to traces the information back to it’s origin to validate it.
